BTEC in Driving Science
Accredited by Edexcel and equivalent to a GCSE, this is the worlds first academic qualification in novice driver training. The course is governed by a company called a2om, who are dedicated to saving lives on the road through better education.

Research over the last two decades has shown that driving is a safety critical skill that depends on three interacting elements. First, the road and traffic environment; second, the vehicle being driven; and third, and most important, driver competence. This course has been designed to include: the physics of crash impact, the fundamentals of fuel efficient driving, and how driver behaviour influences the probability of being involved in a crash. This comprehensive course will produce a more fully-informed and competent driver with a full appreciation of the factors that influence safety.

There are five units to complete. Each unit having two learning outcomes. There are assessment tasks to complete within each learning outcome. Tasks must be completed to achieve each unit and ultimately the BTEC award. The tasks can include: in-car practical, in-car discussion, and online modules.

The whole course evolves around the GDE (goals for driver education) and has different skill levels from 1-4.

1. Vehicle manoeuvring
2. Mastery of traffic situations
3. Goals and context of driving
4. Goals for life and skills for living

Within the framework of the GDE you will be self evaluating your performance which will stimulate and encourage your learning.

Post test
A part of the course is unit 5. Which is post test, so pupils must pass their driving test before this unit can be attempted. It involves all kinds of different driving conditions and roads, from night driving, to planning an economical route. Also self evaluation of risk management.
